Merce Cunningham (1919 – 2009) was an American dancer and choreographer who was one of the most influential american dancers and choreographers of the 20th century. His most popular choreographing technique was chance; where he took decisions in his dance based on the result of a dice, coin etc. He was a student of Martha Graham and removed the relationship between dance and music (by ignoring/going against the music) along with his partner John Cage, which was a revulsion at the time. He also started working with technology (body tracking) which senses movement (with sensors on front camera) and transfers it on a laptop, and started dancing with/and/for the camera. He taught in New York for many years and inspired many generations with his original movements and techniques.
